Kp to get first cyberknife, PET -scan for cancer care

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government (KP) has for the first time decided in the province to provide cyberknife and PET (positron emission tomography) scanning facilities for cancer patients.

Cyberknife -Robotradio Surgery and PET/CT scanning services are made available on Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar.

“The cyberknife system is a non-invasive treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors and other conditions where radiotherapy is indicated. Due to the absence of PET scan facilities in KP, cancer patients had previously been forced to seek treatment in carachi and other provinces.

“The cyberknife system will provide non-surgical, very precise radio surgery for complex and inoperable tumors, said Ehtesham Ali. The PET/CT scan will enable timely cancer diagnosis, accurate staging and appropriate treatment planning for patients,” the health adviser said.

The availability of such medical facilities would enable the residents of KP to be diagnosed and treated in Peshawar, while previously people were obliged to travel to other cities such as Lahore and Karachi to seek cancer treatment facilities.

“It will help placing KP as a leader in modern oncology in Pakistan Cancer Patients, as patients no longer have to travel to other cities for diagnosis and treatment.”

“This historic step marks a new era in cancer treatment in the province and will fill a long -lasting hole”.

Over 11,700 new cancer cases are reported annually in the province of KP, making this facility a timely and life -saving initiative.

Health specialists revealed at the event organized by the Society of Medical Oncology Pakistan (SMOP) last month that only 3% of patients in the country are identified at an early, hardening stage.

“This facility will not only offer advanced treatment to patients, but will also serve as a center for medical research, training and capacity building. This initiative will help reduce the economic and psychological burden of patients and their families. This is a historic breakthrough that will save countless life,” concluded Ehtesham Ali.
