PM Shehbaz, UN Secretary -General discussing important regional, global issues

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with the United Nations Secretary General Mr. António Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Session in New York on September 26.

The meeting was described as “warm and warmly”, in which Prime Minister Shehbaz repeated Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism and emphasized the central role of the United Nations in tackling the world’s most pressing challenges. The Prime Minister praised the Secretary General for his excellent leadership in the promotion of global peace and stability and recognized the UN’s efforts to improve global governance by strengthening the voice of developing countries.

The UN Secretary-General expressed much appreciation of how the rescue and relief operations were carried out during the recent floods in Pakistan. PM Shehbaz placed great emphasis on the need for joint action regarding climate change. Such actions include the provision of additional climate financing to relieve the effect of climate change for the most vulnerable nations, such as Pakistan.

PM Shehbaz highlighted questions of Vital National and Regional Meaning to Pakistan, specifically the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and externally sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. He called for a fair and peaceful solution of the IIOJK -Tvisten in line with the Security Council’s decisions. The Prime Minister praised the Secretary General’s leadership and genuine efforts to step down recent tension between Pakistan and India.

The Prime Minister expressed deep concern about the critical situation in Gaza, confirmed the Prime Minister Pakistan’s support for efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire and end the war, provide humanitarian aid and create a political path to an irreversible decision leading to Palestinian state.

PM Shehbaz repeated Pakistan’s obligation to promote his role as a member of the UN Security Council and continue to be a voice for regional and international peace and security.

The Secretary -General praised Pakistan’s influential voice and important role in the UN, including its fundamental positions in the Security Council.

PM Shehbaz is currently in New York City to attend the 80th session in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The Prime Minister included in his 25-minute address in Unga all national, regional and international issues, including the recent Pakistan India War, Kashmir, Palestine, Terrorism, Afghanistan, ongoing floods in Pakistan and multilateralism.
