Openai rolls its long-awaited chatgpt-parent control feature that starts today.
The age limit for chatgpt is 13 years old, but there has never been a way for parents to control how their children used chatgpt so far. Using the new controls, parents and teens can link their accounts to get stronger protective measures, including new tools to adjust features and set time limits for children.
In a post on x.com, Openai outlines exactly what the new features are. First, you will be able to “reduce sensitive content” that refers to graphic content and viral challenges, and is turned on by default when a Teen account is connected.
Parents will also be able to control chatgpt’s memory and decide if it will be able to remember past chats for more personalized answers. They also get the opportunity to set quiet hours, which will allow them to set times when their teenager cannot use chatgpt.
Parental control can turn off access to the Chatgpt voice model and creation. Finally, parents will also be able to decide whether their teens chats can be used by Openai to improve its future models or not.
Control of consent
Parents will not be able to impose on their teens parents’ limitations without any consent. To link two chatgpt accounts together, a parent or teenager must send an invitation in parental control and the other party must accept it. Openai will notify parents if their teens interrupt their account at any time.
In any case, parents do not have access to their teen’s chat. Some items in the chat can be sent to parents, but it will only happen in rare cases where Openai and its trained reviewers discover that there are possible signs of a serious security risk.
While the new parental control may not go far enough for some people, a statement from Openai reads: “We have worked closely with experts, advocates and decision makers to help inform our approach – we expect to refine and expand these controls over time.”
How to create parental control
Once your account has been upgraded, the New Parental Control setting will be under accounts in the Settings menu.

Breathe, just breathe
The new parental control function arrives, just as Openai has implemented a new security routing system in Chatgpt for all users. Posting on X.com, head of Chatgpt Nick Turley wrote: “As we mentioned earlier, when conversations touch sensitive and emotional topics, the system may change mid-chat to a reasoning model or GPT-5 designed to handle these contexts with extra care”.
However, it seems that the system is currently being triggered very easily and overreacts to any potentially sensitive content, triggering a furious response from Chatgpt users who opposed to be switched to what they consider a subordinate model, even if they pay for a chatgpt plus account.
A user at Reddit described how he told Chatgpt that his plant had been turned into a storm and it responded to him by saying, “Just breath. It will be okay. You’re sure now.” We expect the model’s changing system to be improved over time.
Strengthen protective measures
These new features are part of Openai’s general push against stronger protective measures, as described in a blog post on September 2 called “Building More Gupesment Chatgpt Experience for all” after several very much published controversy from users in crisis while using AI -Chatbot.
The new Chatgpt -Parent Control is rolled out to all chatgpt users today online and will be on mobile soon. Openai has created a new resource site to help parents understand how the new controls work best for them and their children.
