- The German Government wants to make Pakkeys into its most important method of approval
- Allegations that packier are more secure, easy to use and resistant to phishing -attempts
- Passkey -Confirmity is still pretty low, admitted Germany (in 2024)
The German government has described plans to replace passwords with Pakkeys as the main authentication method, the latter being seen as more secure, phishing-resistant and user-friendly.
A BSI (Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security) message was supplemented with draft guidelines (BSI TR -03188) that detailed how Paskes compare a public key stored on the site with a private key stored on the user’s device.
Unity -bound parcel (stored locally and attached to a device) and synchronized passpeaks (stored in encrypted cloud for access to multiple devices) were both noticed as acceptable approval methods.
Germany wants to standardize Passkey -Use
Because parcels are account -specific, they cannot be recycled across multiple sites, which immediately increases security. Despite guidance for best practice, it is a fact that many of us still use the same passwords across multiple accounts for ease. But being stored on the device or in the cloud means that users do not have to remember the bags for each account.
Pakkeys are also resistant to man-in-mid-mid-attack and phishing attempts because they require a user’s own private key to be used from an approved device.
“We have to make cyber security as simple as possible and at the same time robust. Pakkeys is a perfect example of how to meet technical challenges with technical solutions. The future belongs to them,” said BSI president Claudia Plattner (translated).
Still, BSI recognizes that there is a long way to go. A 2024 report found that only 38% were familiar with Pakkeys, and the adoption was only 18%. There is also the fact that Passkeyys were slow to leave, with few sites that offer the opportunity to generate a Passkey-based login in the early days.
Today, however, the government of Germany is not the only body that recognizes the benefits.
In May 2025, Microsoft declared that it would make all new accounts as they were available as standard-to last, this is also expected to expand to existing accounts.
