- ONE Peaky blinders Successor series are in the works on Netflix and BBC
- Two seasons consisting of six episodes each have been green -lit, with Cillian Murphy Executive producing
- The show follows a new generation of Shelby’s in 1953 during Birmingham’s reconstruction after 2. World War
Netflix not only gives us Peaky blinders film The immortal manBut the streamer has announced (in partnership with the BBC) a successor series that has already been green -lit for two seasons.
As the BBC’s Synopsis explains: “Britain, 1953. After being strongly bombed in World War II, Birmingham builds a better future out of concrete and steel. In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky blindersThe race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project will be a brutal competition for mythical dimensions.
“This is a city with unprecedented possibility and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-absorbed heart.”
To paraphrase the youth, I am so set that my mother asks me to get up from the couch. But we shouldn’t be too surprised; Knight already confirmed “The World would continue” after the film, and another binge-worthy show in the franchise makes the most sense.
If something, it’s Cillian Murphy’s role change that is the most surprising. After being the lead in the original series and set to surprise his role in the film, he will not actually be on screen in the sequel – and this can do or break its success.
Opinion: Can the Peaky Blinders the successor succeed without Cillian Murphy? I’m not that sure
Originally, Murphy Tommy Shelby, patriarch of the Shelby family and the head of the Peaky Blinders band (hence the title comes from) played. Shelby served in WW1, undertook New York Mafia and became a workplace member in the demand for the series. But during the success of the season, Murphy does not represent his role – he is ready to be the performing producer.
Would we really expect to see him almost 10 years after the end of 2. World War? Frankly, I think it would be a miracle if he was still alive. We do not yet find out when The immortal man is set, but I would guess that the new movie would be much closer in time on the main series.
Logically, it makes full sense for Murphy not to be starring, but he is so synonymous with the show that I am not sure if one is working without the other. He is one of the protagonists we were in, and it’s not like we have much of the past to hang on (Rip, Helen McCrory).
However, there are two positive things we need to hold on to: Murphy as a producer means that the two new seasons must have a good sense of continuity as his commitment ties the two shows naturally together – even though he is no longer on screen.
We have also had the potential success of the film. If The immortal man is a hit that is the potential for its new characters to be picked up during the sequel seasons (depending on when it is set). We know that Barry Keoghan will be one of these and it is not exactly a bad look to get him involved in any project (except maybe any of Sabrina Carpenter).
I squeeze the straws here, seeing everything we know about the peaky blinders the successor is limited. But for other Murphy heads there is hope and hi, if it all goes wrong we have at least got his performance in 28 years later: Bone Temple.
