PMD predicts rain, thunderstorm over the northern Pakistan

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted widespread rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and snowfalls in the northern parts of the country over the next 24 hours warning of flooding of flash and damage to weak installations.

According to PMD, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad and Punjab are expected to be hit by gusty wind, dust storms, thunderstorms and rain, while mountain areas may get snowfall.

Officials warned that heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding in rainfall streams and nullahs in districts including dir, swat, Shangla, buner, Kohistan, mansehra, abbottabad, charsadda, nowshera, swabi, murree, murree, galiyat, Islamabad, rawalpindi and parts Kashmir.

The Met Office also warned that stormy conditions – influenced by hailstorms, lightning and high wind – can interfere with daily life and pose risks of vulnerable infrastructure such as mud houses, walls, electricity coils, advertising boards, solar cell panels and vehicles. Travelers and tourists are advised to plan their travels carefully in line with the prevailing conditions.

Islamabad and adjacent areas are likely to witness cloudy sky with rain, thunderstorms and gusty wind. Some areas could experience heavy showers and hail.

In KP, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected in districts including dir, chitral, swat, kohistan, shangla, batagram, mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Martan, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Kohat, Nowshera, Swabi, Khyber, Orakzai Lakki Marwat, in which Ice, daMmail Khan, Waziristan and Kurram. Heavy rain and hail can also hit in some areas.

Punjab is expected to receive rain and thunderstorms across several districts, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowalalal, Khushab, Bhakkar, Layyah, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Khanewal, Multan, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Kotu Ad Ghazi Khan. Heavy showers and hail are also expected in some places.

Most of Sindh is expected to stay warm and dry, although Umerkot, Tharparkar and some coastal areas can see partially cloudy sky, light rain and thunderstorms. In Balochistan, the weather probably remains dry and warm except for partially cloudy conditions along the coast.

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are also expected to receive rain, thunderstorms and strong winds with chances of heavy rain and hail in certain areas.

Over the past 24 hours, Punjab, KP, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir witnessed rain with thunderstorms and strong winds while reporting heavy showers in some districts. The rest of the country remained pretty hot and dry.

PMD has encouraged citizens to remain vigilant, follow weather counseling and take the necessary precautions under the ongoing unstable conditions.
