- Surfshark now supports only the four latest iOS and macOS releases
- It dropped Legacy iOS and MacOS support to protect users from threats
- VPN suggests solutions for users who are unable to update their devices
Surfshark ends official support for older iOS and macOS versions and focuses on the latest Apple releases instead.
Surfshark, which ranks second on our list of the best VPN providers available, announced it now only covers the four latest iOS and MacOS releases. At the time of writing, it fully supports support iOS 15 or newer versions and MacOS 12 (Monterey) and later.
When a new version of MacOS or iOS falls, Surfshark’s support for the oldest of the previously supported versions ends. This means that older iPhones, iPads and Macs will no longer receive app updates, as Surfshark seems to “encourage everyone to use the safest devices.”
Existing installations on non -supported systems will continue to work for now, but users will not be able to expect future updates. It is unnecessary to say that Surfshark recommends that users update their devices to continue to receive the strongest protection.
Why the change happens
Surfshark’s shift mirrors Apple’s rapid roll -out of new operating system versions, a trend that has left a shrinking base of older users.
As advertised in a recent blog post, by dropping support for older iOS and macOS releases, Surfshark can redistribute resources for security improvements and new features for current devices receiving regular security fixes, helping users stay ahead of new threats.
This includes rolling new features and technologies, an improved interface and app performance and a streamlined update process.
It is worth just in mind that older systems that lack these same updates remain vulnerable to known and new threats, which puts users at unnecessary risk.
What older Surfshark -Users should do
Surfshark emphasizes the importance of subscribers updating their devices to receive the latest security improvements.
To do this, users can go to “Settings” and “Software Update” to install the latest version of iOS or MacOS. Upgrading continues to ensure access to official app updates, bug fixes and Surfshark’s full package of security features, including multi -hop servers and surfshars.
If your hardware cannot be upgraded – perhaps because it is too old to meet Apple’s minimum requirements – Surfshark has a few recommendations.
For macOS, an option is to install an older version of the Surfshar app. Surfshark delivers step-by-step installation instructions all the way back to version 10.12 (Sierra). Additional settings include connection via manual Wireguard configurations using a third-party app, download and connection using OpenVPN configurations or using the built-in Manual IKEV2 connection.
iOS users also have the option of manual Wireguard and OpenVPN connections or built-in Manual IKEV2 connections.
Surfshark delivers 24/7 support via live chat and e email to answer any questions you may have. By intervening before the next Apple release, Surfshark users can avoid service breaks and continue to browse safely.
