- A battery fire has damaged storage hardware in South Korea
- The problem has brought the South Korean government to stop
- Over 850 TB information has been lost forever
A brand in the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) Data Center in Daejeon, South Korea, has perfectly illustrated why we emphasize such an impact on backup services. Reports suggest that the incident was the result of a battery fire and it destroyed over 858TB data – which is now permanently lost.
In the fire, 384 battery packs were burned, which took down 96 government systems. Although this is obviously still a huge loss, 95 of these backups -but the G -Drive system (Government Drive), which was primarily used by the Ministry of Personal Management, did not.
This is exactly why we talk (probably too much) about how important it is to have the best cloud backup to look after your data. The best advice we can offer is to use the 3-2-1 rule-what means three copies on two media types (eg Sky and Hardware) with a stored offsite.
Total loss
Although data recovery software is available, it is unlikely that it is easy to get back from a loss of this scale. Each worker was awarded 30 GB of space on the drive – which was incredibly not backed up due to its large capacity.
The latest data suggest that only 115 of the 647 networks have been restored, making the level of recovery only 18% so far. Recovery is expected to take up to a month.
Government -e -Mail, sites and National 119 were removed due to the fire, and reports estimate that data of 8 years value was lost and about 17% of central government officials are affected.
The departments that depend on G-drive have been significantly affected after the incident. A source from the Ministry of Personnel Confirmed;
“Employees stored all working material on G-driven and used them as needed, but operations are now practically on a standstill.”
