Cleveland Brown’s main coach Kevin Stefanski announced Friday that the Shedeur Sanders will be the team’s backup -quarterback for their game against Pittsburgh Steelers.

Browns traded Joe Flacco to Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday and opened the door for Sanders to be added to the active list for the first time in his career. In the team’s first five matches he was the emergency quarterback.

Flacco fought when Browns went 1-3 in his four starts while finishing just over 58% of his passports in 815 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions before being benched to Dillon Gabriel. Flacco served as the team’s backup in the team’s loss to Minnesota Vikings in week 5.

Stefanski did not commit to Sanders being backup -quarterback on Wednesday, which made fans wonder if they would have chosen to promote Quartersy -Quarterback Bailey Zappe instead. Zappe started the team’s season finale in 2024.

Sanders said he was excited about the opportunity to back up Dillon Gabriel on Thursday.

“I’m generally in a big mental space,” Sanders said. “I would say you tend to get a little more excited when you see a light at the end of the tunnel, certainly. … Whatever my role is here, I’m grateful. I’m glad just to do it.”

Gabriel started his first career start in the team’s loss of 21-17 to the Vikings last week in London. The 24-year-old completed 57.6% of its passports in 190 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
