Iran offers to convey Pak-Afghan border stresses

Iran has expressed deep concern about the escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, offering to mediate between the two neighbors to help restore peace and stability in the region.

In a statement on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei expressed concern about the recent development between Islamabad and Kabul, which emphasized the importance of mutual respect for each country’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

Baqaei called for “restraint and the immediate commencement of dialogue” between the two sides to step down tension and solve their differences through diplomatic means.

The spokesman said the Islamic Republic of Iran associates “fundamental importance for the preservation of peace and stability in the surrounding environment” and confirmed Tehran’s willing to help the efforts to reduce hostilities between the two neighboring Muslim nations.

“Iran seeks peace and stability in the region and encourages both Pakistan and Afghanistan to step down tension through immediate negotiations,” Baghaei said, emphasizing the need to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all nations.

Tensions flared again late Saturday night when Afghan forces opened unprovoked fire over several points along the border between Pakistan-Afghanistan, leading to a strong and immediate retaliation from the Pakistani army.

The confrontation took place on the night of 11-12. October, when Afghan Taliban forces reportedly supported by “Indian sponsored elements of Fitna al-Khawarij,” launched an unprovoked attack on Pakistani border positions.

“The fair act that included firing and a few physical attacks was aimed at destabilizing the border areas to facilitate terrorism and promote FAK’s dishonest design,” ISPR said. The term Fitna al-Khawarij is used by the Pakistani State to describe militants associated with the described Tehreek-E-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
