- Governor Hochul calls for vigilance and warns the IRS Never Contacts Citizens of Personal Information
Cyber criminals lean into the New York State’s inflation refund checks initiative in an attempt to steal their bank information and possibly money.
State of New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, warned the citizens of an ongoing phishing campaign that mimics in the New York State Tax Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
In the phishing message, which is distributed via SMS, voice messages, e -mail and direct mail, the scammers urged their victims to provide them with accurate bank information so that they can receive this refund.
Abuses key dates
New York’s refund control of inflation is one -off payments intended to offset increasing living costs. Depending on the income and filing status, residents who filed their income taxes from 2023 were automatically received between $ 150 and $ 400, and apparently about $ 2 billion was distributed in this way.
“Your request for a refund has been processed and approved. Indicate accurate payment information by September 19, 2025. Funds will be deposited in your bank account or sent via paper control within 1-2 working days,” the Phishing message reads.
“Failure to submit the required payment information by September 19, 2025, will result in permanent forfeit by this refund under New York Revised Statute §5747.11.”
The reimbursement process is automatic and citizens are not required to provide any information except to submit income tax forms.
“With scams aimed at the state’s initiative to refund inflation, let me be clear: The tax department and IRS are not calling or SMS people for personal information. My administration encourages New Yorkers to remain vigilant and report these scams to the tax department to protect yourself from being a victim,” Governor Hochul said.
Scammers are known for using current events as themes for phishing and other fraud. Taxing and returning season is only one of them, with major sporting events, religious events, key dates and more used.
