Harlan Coben’s Lazarus Drops on Prime Video on October 22, and I guarantee you are not ready for any of the unhinged twists in this six-part series.
Without giving away any spoilers, the show follows a forensic psychologist who is only known as Laz (Sam Claflin), who comes face to face with several cold cases after his father’s death, Dr. Lazarus (Bill Nighy). If something, this synopsis is neglected, but it is to your advantage if you start to look with as little knowledge as possible.
But not too little, of course, for what would I be the poenget with me? If you’ve seen Coben’s previous Netflix -Shows like Fool me once and Miss youYou know the man is the king of a perfectly executed mystery with enough twists available to keep you up at night.
I’m not even sure where to start with which twist is the most unexpected, so I asked star Alexandra Roach (who plays Jenna) for a little help – and her answer surprised me.
Harlan Coben’s biggest twist is in section 1, says Alexandra Roach
Look at
Obviously, I don’t want to tell you anything about what’s going to come, but keep your eyes peeled to the end of section 1. When Roach first read the manuscript, she couldn’t believe what she saw.
“Literally everything can happen, and it does,” she tells me. “Within the end of the first episode, you’re just sitting there, open mouth. You think it’s a thing and you’ve seen it before, and then suddenly it turns on a hairpin. You’re in another world completely. I loved it about reading it when I was sent it.
“I remember coming to the end of paragraph 1 and just being so surprised by the end. It comes from Harlan Coben’s mind and he’s such a great storyteller. You just don’t know what will happen then, and it’s quite surprising.”
But how prepared should you be when you tie the series? I use my very false ‘surprise-o-meter’ to judge this. If a show like Midsomer murder is at the bottom (meaning, completely guessed) and Utopia (Bonker’s dystopian thriller Roach also plays into) is at the top where ranks Lazarus?
“I think it’s about eight or nine on the scale,” Roach concludes (with 10 is the most surprising). “I think like humans we like to be surprised and there’s so much out there. We see content on our phones and everything. It’s really nice to have that kind of raw experience of having any idea of where this story will go.”
