There are many reasons why you’ll want to see the new Paramount movie Roof man – the wacky true story of convicted criminal Jeffrey Manchester, the nostalgia of Toys R Us, the extended scene of Channing Tatum nude. But have you considered that it is actually a Christmas movie?
It’s a perspective that completely passed me by when I first saw it, but speaking to director Derek Cianfrance after the premiere at the London Film Festival has changed my mind. Christmas is staring us in the face all the time, and it’s also crucial to telling Manchester’s story.
For me it therefore makes sense to Roof man viewers can have the same debate among themselves, and it reminds me of the age-old “is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” feud we refuse to agree on. For Cianfrance, the comparison makes perfect sense… and yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
There is ‘no mistake’ that Roofman is a Christmas movie, so don’t fight it

“That would be the dream, wouldn’t it? I think it could happen,” replies Cianfrance when I ask him about Roof man comes with Die Hard‘s footsteps.
“I don’t think there’s any mistake that this is a Christmas movie. Christmas movies are very nostalgic and often about coming home. They take place in small towns where a big event comes to bring everyone together and have great Christmas music.”
“I was able to insert some of my favorite Christmas music into this movie. We’ll see if it stands the test of time…let’s have this chat again in two, three years.”
Personally, I think there is no doubt Roof man will stand the test of time, just like Die Hard. Its retelling of Manchester’s history ticks all the boxes for every member of the family, being PG enough for the kids while being exciting and complex enough for adults. No arguments or people pleading to change the channel makes for a happy Christmas season, and that’s the peace we’re all looking for.
She talks to Kirsten Dunst at the premiere and tells me another ideal reason why we want to see Roofman in December. “It’s a human story done in a way that’s not sappy. It makes you feel good, which I think is refreshing…we need some of that.”
While we wait for Roof man to hit digital purchase and Paramount Plus, you can watch Die Hard on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video in the US and Disney+ in the UK and Australia.
