- Netflix releases the first teaser trailer for Emily in Paris Season 5
- Changes the series title to Emily in Rome in its closing moments
- All episodes will be released on December 18
The first teaser trailer for Emily in Paris season 5 is here and we’ve had our first taste of the blissful high life following Emily’s (Lily Collins) move to Rome in the popular Netflix series.
Season 5’s first trailer shows that pretty much everyone else — Mindy (Ashley Park), Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Luc (Bruno Gouery) and Julian (Samuel Arnold) — has followed Emily to Italy, prompting Julian to ask the question, “If we’re all here… who’s in Paris?”
That’s an excellent question, but one I don’t want to know the answer to yet. If you feel the same way I do about how Emily is much better suited to make a new life in Rome, it’s Emily in Paris season 5 trailer gives us a great clue that the move might be more endgame than first thought.
Opinion: I need Emily in Paris Season 5 to really be Emily in Rome Season 1, and the trailer has delivered
Look at
Everything about Emily’s life in Paris annoyed me – the lack of personal and professional development, the constant miscommunication between her and Gabriel, who allowed herself to be overshadowed by her friends and colleagues. There’s only so much of this you can take and by season 4 I had reached my limit.
When Emily first went to Rome in the second part of Season 4, it was like a light had been turned on. She genuinely seemed happier in herself, more confident and sure of what she wanted. It felt like she was trying on a pair of shoes for the first time that had plenty of room to grow into.
That’s exactly what Season 5’s shift in location signals: growth. Of course, you can’t run away from your problems, but it looks like Netflix agrees with me when it comes to Paris giving Emily everything it had to offer.
If you wait until the last seconds of the new trailer, you will see Emily in Paris logo scrubbed out and replaced with Emily in Rome. It’s a sign that the shift in Emily’s personal life is more permanent than we thought it would be, and that’s music to my ears.
Even if nothing particularly dramatic happens in Season 5 (and I’m sure it will), I think grounding and clarity are the right steps forward to take. Sure, the supporting cast can be in as much chaos as they want, but Emily needs something more stable for us to get more out of her.
This is a Netflix show though, so I won’t take this moment for granted. As the full season 5 synopsis says, “just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout spirals into heartbreak and career setbacks. Emily seeks stability and leans into her French lifestyle until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships.”
Sigh… I guess I can’t have it all. In the meantime, I’ll hope all roads lead back to Rome, even if we’ll have to take a French detour in the process.
