As of 3:24 PM ET, OpenAI writes: “We have identified the issue and are working to mitigate it.” The ChatGPT manufacturer is not yet providing details on what is causing the problem, but it has identified the problem and is working on a solution.
As we noted above, this outage mostly affects free ChatGPT users, so if you have a paid account or one through business or education, you probably won’t see any issues.
As someone with a free ChatGPT account, here’s what responses currently look like from the chatbot. ChatGPT doesn’t say much, if anything, just returns an error.

At least OpenAI is quick to acknowledge the issues here: the official status page reads, “Increased error on ChatGPT conversations for free users,” and confirms a partial outage.

Down Detector reports are increasing

As you can see just before 3:00 PM ET, reports of problems on ChatGPT started to increase and I’ve been getting an error in my attempts to use the AI chatbot on desktop and through the iOS app.
