- Universal is reportedly developing a new film as part of The mummy franchise
- It will bring back series stars Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz
- Fans of the 1999 classic have reacted to the news with surprise and delight
Do you hear that? It’s the sounds of The mummy‘s fanbase celebrating the news that the horror franchise’s next entry will reunite us with its fan-favorite stars.
According to reports from Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Universal is reviving the film series once again. Even better, the entertainment giant has reportedly held talks with the show’s iconic leads Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz about starring in it.
If the pair sign on, it will reunite them more than 25 years after their last on-screen partnership. Frasier and Weisz starred as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan in the 1999 classic The mummy and its 2001 sequel The mummy returns. But while Frasier returned for the 2008s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon EmperorWeisz was not part of its cast.
Predictably, there is very little information about the upcoming film’s plot. Sources apparently told THR that it will be a sequel to the Frasier and Weisz-led films rather than a reboot of said franchise.
Given Weisz’s involvement, it will also disregard events depicted in the Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. So while the film is currently being referred to as The Mummy 4will it technically be the third part of the O’Connell-Carnahan story.
As for who else is reportedly involved in the production, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka the horror lovers known as Radio Silence, who helmed the fifth and sixth Scream film, is in line to direct from a script written by The family plan film series writer David Coggeshall.
Not an undead nightmare, but a dream come true
Despite being released to mixed to poor reviews in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Stephen Sommers directed The mummy Not only were the films huge hits at the box office – collectively grossing over $1.4 billion – but they continue to hold a place in many people’s hearts.
The first two films in particular are beloved by film buffs, not least because of Frasier and Weisz’s absorbing on-screen relationship. Along with the unmistakable sexual chemistry between their characters, The mummy has been labeled as the movie that led to the bisexual awakening of many millennials.
But I digress. Given the high esteem these films hold, it’s no surprise that fans of a certain age—myself included—have reacted with surprise and delight at the prospect of another The mummy movie starring Frasier and Weisz.
Reddit pages, including r/entertainment and r/movies, as well as other forms of social media, are flooded with comments from ecstatic users. In fact, the nostalgia factor is so high that some have even called for Universal to replace Radio Silence with Sommers as well.
Are you as excited as I and other millennials are about Frasier and Weisz’s likely return to The Mummy 4? Or should the film series be put to rest a little longer? Tell me in the comments.
