- Thinkware U3000 Pro allows up to three-channel coverage
- It features Sony Starvis 2 HDR front (4K) and rear (2K) cameras.
- Connected Service Support allows for live viewing during relaxation via an app
Thinkware has taken the wraps off its latest dash cam, which builds on the existing and popular U3000 with improved hardware and Connected Service support that allows drivers to remotely monitor their vehicles.
The new ‘Pro’ version remains equipped with a 4K UHD front-facing camera and a 2K QHD rear-facing unit, both of which are powered by Sony Starvis 2 sensors (IMX678 and IMX675) for excellent quality footage in low visibility and low light.
Thinkware’s Radar Event Detection system has been improved so that the range now exceeds that of its predecessor. The technology essentially monitors vehicles at all times and works like the sensors and radars on modern cars to offer Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS), such as a forward collision warning and notifications when the vehicle in front moves away.
The U3000 Pro also has integrated Wi-Fi and GPS for precise location tracking in the event of an incident, with revised smart parking modes that include high-temperature safeguards and battery-saving features, meaning the device can go into a low-power mode if it gets too hot – instead of switching off.
However, the camera must be connected to a vehicle to get the most out of functions in a parked car. There is also a separate LTE Wi-Fi router package that must be purchased separately to use all the connected features of the dash cam.
The company says that for fleet users, taxi drivers and professionals, the U3000 Pro also supports an optional infrared camera, enabling three-channel coverage for maximum driver and passenger protection.
Room for improvement
Enhanced Connected Service support – which allows for remote vehicle monitoring via a smartphone app – offers real-time live viewing, impact alerts, vehicle tracking, driving history analysis and emergency notifications.
At $429.99 / £399 for the single-channel U3000 Pro (around AU$800) and $549.99 / £479 for the two-channel U3000 Pro (around $960), Thinkware says the latest version will be one of its “best-selling dash cams this Christmas” due to the fact that it offers extended connectivity.
That said, the outgoing U3000 model is being discounted on Thinkware’s website while still offering many of the features and excellent twin cameras.
