- KPop Demon Hunters 2 is reportedly confirmed to go ahead
- Netflix and Sony have struck a deal that will see the musical sequel land in 2029
- Fans can likely expect additional spin-offs and shorts in the meantime
KPop Demon Hunters 2 definitely looks to be moving forward, but fans of the demon-hunting animation shouldn’t expect to see it on their screens anytime soon, as Netflix is reportedly eyeing a 2029 release date.
That’s according to Bloomberg, which has reported that the world’s top streaming service had finally reached a deal for the sequel with the original film’s creators, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and production company Sony.
A four-year wait might sound like a long time, but it’s a typical timeline for a major animated film when you look at past projects. For example, there were five years between Sony’s release Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the latter of which became the studio’s highest-grossing animated film to date.
While the news hasn’t been confirmed by Sony or Netflix yet, it’s almost certain to go ahead, as the two entertainment juggernauts have been confirmed to be discussing a sequel film deal since August, so it’s likely those talks have finally come to an end.
What can fans expect from a KPop Demon Hunters sequel?
No one needed a crystal ball to see that KPop Demon Hunters would get a second act. The film has become Netflix’s most watched film of all time and continues to rank among the most streamed titles across streaming platforms – and that’s not even mentioning the success of its soundtrack or its subsequent cultural cachet.
The film about a world-saving female pop trio has such a large (and growing) fandom that even Netflix wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming attention it’s received, with the streamer reversing its negative attitude towards theatrical releases by bringing a sing-a-long version of the mega-hit to the big screen, and retailers scrambling to get their hands on film-inspired merchandise.
Like the sequel, fans will have to wait until next year to see anything official KPop Demon Hunters products (Netflix must be kicking itself with Christmas coming up) which should help maintain its popularity, but what about in the years after? Can fans expect to see others KPop Demon Hunters projects?
There is a big chance if reports are anything to go by. According to its source, Bloomberg said Netflix is already considering additional programming, such as a short film, to keep KPop Demon Hunters in the ether.
A short film, spin-off, or TV show, which co-writer Kang, in an interview with Variety earlier this year, leaves with comments, seems very likely and shouldn’t affect any ideas being considered for the sequel, as she has already expressed that there was plenty left on the table.
“We set up so much for potential backstory,” Kang said. “Obviously there are a lot of questions that are unanswered and areas that aren’t explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much film you could tell in 85 minutes.”
This could mean that fans can expect several different prequel stories, focusing on other members of the fictional K-pop girl group Huntrix instead of just lead singer Rumi. Kang said that “we have backstories for Zoey and Mira – ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just rejected them. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”
