27th constitutional amendment challenged

.

LAHORE:

The 27th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2025 has been challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) for allegedly undermining the independence of the judiciary and changing the constitutional framework without due consultation.

The petition was filed naming the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Law as respondents.

The petitioner argued that the amendment is contrary to the preamble of the Constitution, arguing that it seeks to curtail the powers of the Supreme Court, thereby weakening the independence of the judiciary.

According to the petition, the provisions of the amendment threaten the system of checks and balances envisaged in the constitution.
