ISLAMABAD:
The action on the resignation of PTI dissident Senator Saifullah Abro has been stalled amid the ongoing debate on the 27th constitutional amendment as the Senate chairman is yet to sign the resignation submitted by the lawmaker.
Despite the fact that Abro’s resignation has been tendered in Parliament, the senate’s secretariat has not initiated a formal procedure, and the chairman has refrained from verifying or sending the case on for further consideration.
Consequently, a reference under Article 63-A, which deals with disqualification on the ground of abandonment, has also not been forwarded.
Senator Abro, who had defected from the PTI after voting in favor of the 27th constitutional amendment, had tendered his resignation to the upper house earlier.
But with the Speaker’s approval pending, the resignation remains legally incomplete, leaving his parliamentary status in limbo as the government pushes ahead with the 27th Amendment.
The PTI has also moved to expel the lawmaker for defying party politics. The party also distanced itself from Senator Abro, who has been removed from all communication channels, including the Parliamentary Party’s WhatsApp group. The party also decided to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to immediately terminate his senatorship.
