Why Apple’s AirPods 4 rule the school
In our review of the AirPods 4, our main issue was the price: at $129, we felt they were too expensive compared to the competition. But under $85? That’s a whole other story, because these are a big improvement over the previous generation.
As always with AirPods, you get the most out of them if you’re on board with the Apple ecosystem: their best features are exclusive to Apple technology. As we said in our review, it makes for a great experience: “The main-track surround sound is so impressive with movies, the automatic device switching between Apple technology is really useful, and it’s generally a seamless experience.”
We really like the automatic switching between different Apple devices because we move from Mac to iPad to iPhone all the time, and as the advertising slogan puts it, it just works.
The sound is very good for this type of fit – the AirPods, unlike their Pro siblings, sit outside your ear canal instead of in it, giving you better awareness of the world around you, but losing a bit of bass. However, the AirPods 4 still feel full and impactful.
And the main tracking of surround sound is really good in TV shows and movies, delivering a true home theater effect without making you unpopular with your neighbors.
As you’d expect, there’s also Siri support and Find My, and the new gesture controls enable you to confirm things like “do you want to record an outdoor walk” with a nod or reject calls with a shake of the head. And the microphone quality is good for making voice and video calls.
