ISLAMABAD:
The newly created Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has listed to hear a petition seeking the formation of a judicial commission to investigate alleged fraud in the February 2024 general election.
The country’s main opposition party PTI had filed the petition in the Supreme Court soon after the general elections through Salman Akram Raja.
But the FCC, which was created under the recently enacted 27th Amendment to the Constitution, will now hear the case.
According to official sources, FCC Chief Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan has constituted a five-member larger bench that will take up the call tomorrow (Tuesday).
The bench headed by Justice Aamer Farooq comprises Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, Justice KK Agha, Justice Rozi Khan Barrech and Justice Syed Arshad Hussain Shah.
The PTI could not contest the February 8 general election as a party in the face of a Supreme Court order that stripped the party of its election symbol.
However, independent candidates supported by the party emerged as the largest group in the National Assembly. The party claimed the election was massively rigged to prevent it from forming a government.
It had later approached the SC with a request to form a judicial commission to probe the alleged electoral fraud – a plea the SC did not take up in the ensuing year and nine months.
Several petitions have already been filed in various high courts challenging the 27th constitutional amendment.
