The Matchweek 5 clash sees Arsenal, the only team yet to claim the Champions League this season, take on joint top scorers Bayern Munich at the Emirates. The Gunners are only second to Vincent Kompany’s men in the league stage, but they have a terrible record against the German giants, while Harry Kane has 15 goals and three assists in 21 games against his boyhood club.
The former Tottenham man, who has already scored 24 this term, has more goals against Arsenal than any other Premier League club. And he found the net on his first return to North London as a Münchner, converting a penalty in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw at the quarter-final stage of the UCL last season, a match in which Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and another Arsenal old boy, Serge Gnabry, also registered. A header from Joshua Kimmich in the second leg put Mikel Arteta’s men out.
Munich tore reigning champions PSG apart in their final Champions League game. They were 2-0 up and crossed thanks to a Luis Diaz double, only for the former Liverpool man to see red at the break. He will miss this meeting through suspension. Even with 10 men, however, Bayern never seemed to relinquish their lead. They are coming off the back of a thunderous 6-2 win over Freiburg at the weekend, in which Michael Olise grabbed a brace, and have won four of their last five meetings with Arsenal, scoring 18 in the process.
However, Arsenal delivered a resounding statement of intent on Sunday, a hat-trick from Eberechi Eze inspiring a relentless drubbing of arch-rivals Tottenham. Most ominous of all, however, was the sheer depth of Arsenal’s squad. Even with Viktor Gyokeres given the night off, and both Martin Odegaard and Gabriel injured, both their starting lineup and bench were teeming with talent. It feels like a group that – at long last – has what it takes to compete with the big fish.
