- Marvel seems to have revealed something big about Avengers: Doomsdays cast list
- A recent Disney event reminded fans who is part of its vast ensemble
- The grouping of its various actors could have revealed the teams we will see in the MCU movie
Avengers: Doomsday continues to be shrouded in mystery ahead of its launch late next year. Really, DoomsdayDespite the December 18, 2026 release date and 27-man cast list, very little has been officially revealed about the much-anticipated superhero movie.
However, thanks to a recent Disney presentation that took place in Italy, we could have learned which groups our heroes will split into to tackle Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom. And if this information can be taken at face value, it raises a few interesting questions about the plot of the Marvel movie.
Potential spoilers immediately follow before Avengers: Doomsdayso proceed at your own risk.
As the above video shows, it looks like there will be five teams of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes to keep track of.
There are no surprises with four of these lineups. The Fantastic Four and The New Avengers – the latter formerly known as the Thunderbolts – remain unchanged from their most recent film outings. As expected, the old X-Men team only contains mutants, and then Shuri, M’Baku and Namor are lumped together after the trio shared the screen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The fifth group is where things get interesting, but because it seems that the rest of the Doomsday‘s cast will form another Avengers team led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America.
Captain America: Brave New Worldending revealed that Wilson was ready to assemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and the Thunderbolts’ installation as The New Avengers has not curtailed Wilson’s ambition, with Thunderbolts‘ post-credits scene confirming that Cap 2.0 has gone ahead with his plan.
Based on what was shown at the Disney Italy event, he has called upon the services of heroes he not only knows, but who are not currently part of a team. That includes longtime pals in Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man.
Interestingly, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi is also part of this lineup, which raises the question of how he will be involved. Given that Shang-Chi is based in the same city as Lang, aka San Francisco, will the latter reach out to the former and convince him to join Wilson’s collective?
The biggest thing that has piqued fans’ interest about Cap’s supposed team, however, is the apparent inclusion of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. When we last saw The God of Mischief, he was holding the multiverse’s seemingly infinite number of timelines together to prevent its collapse. So how can he be part of a team if he is otherwise engaged?
In my opinion there are two scenarios. The first is that Loki is part of Cap’s team due to his familial connection to Thor, and the latter is tasked with defending his brother if Doom comes calling to kill Loki and reset the multiverse in his image. Alternatively, Doom could locate Loki first, remove the latter from his multiverse-saving role, and throw him back to Earth. From there, Loki could ally with Sam’s team, who could certainly use Loki’s multiversal knowledge to track down Doom.
Of course, MCU fans—myself included—may just be reading too much into this latest presentation. But with rumors it circulates Doomsday‘s first trailer could be released very soon, Disney might be preparing us for the team-ups we’ll see as part of the Marvel Phase 6 movie’s opening teaser.
While we await the first official footage for one of 2026’s most exciting new films, read up on everything we know so far about Avengers: Doomsday.
