- The winners of the International Landscape Photographer of The Year 2025 have been announced
- The stunning winning image by Austrian photographer Lukas Trixl was taken in New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand
- Lukas’ camera of choice was the Canon EOS R5
The winners of the International Landscape Photographer of The Year 2025 competition were announced this week and there is a familiarity with the cameras used by the winning entrants.
Take the overall winning image, a prehistoric-looking scene of a snow-capped mountain found in New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand, captured by Austrian photographer Lukas Trixl.
Lukas shot the stunning image with the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera, which he pairs with either the Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS USM, Laowa 12mm Zero-D f2.8, Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 and Canon RF 200-800mm external lenses that have been upgraded from the E0OSDLR lens (E0OSD2 from Canon Rebel USA) years ago.
This news comes in the wake of the Wildlife Photographer of The Year 2025 award, which was also dominated by the EOS R5 – although the overall winner of the competition used an 11-year-old DSLR, the Nikon D810.
The other major prize at ILPOTY 2025 was the overall winning portfolio of J. Fritz Rumpf, who used the Nikon D850 DSLR, Nikon Z7 II mirrorless and DJI Mavic 3 drone for his wide range of landscape images.
So there’s a theme that connects these competition winners – don’t write off older pro gear. The EOS R5 is still a great camera, despite being five years old and having been succeeded by the EOS R5 Mark II and the aforementioned DSLRs being even older.
And there’s good news if you’re focused on such competitions but need top-of-the-line equipment to help make your vision a reality – you don’t have to spend big. For example, the Canon EOS R5 has dropped to record low prices in the wake of the Black Friday sales and as it is now an older model.

Released in July 2020, the Canon EOS R5 remains a popular camera among professionals more than five years later – at least if major 2025 photo competitions are anything to go by. Its compact and robust body, sharp 45 MP stills, powerful in-body image stabilization and reliable autofocus are among the many features that make it a top camera for professional photographers. The EOS R5 has dropped in price by around 35% since launch, making it an excellent buy today.
