Five-year-old Inayah Amin narrowly escapes death after plunging into an uncovered cesspit outside a private school in Manghopir, Karachi.

KARACHI:

Another incident that highlights Karachi’s ongoing well dangers occurred in Manghopir, where a five-year-old girl narrowly escaped death after falling into a sewage well outside a private school.

According to police, the incident happened near Garam Chashma in Union Committee No. 2, where First Class Inayah Amin slipped into the manhole while returning home with classmates after school. Other children raised the alarm and got a passer-by to rescue her in time. The manhole was four or five feet deep fortunately with some waste water.

The child’s parents rushed to the school after hearing about the incident. The police also reached the spot immediately. SHO Manghopir Zubair Nawaz confirmed that ‘several manholes in the area have been uncovered’ and added that the girl was saved only due to the timely action of a passerby.

City chairman Nawaz Brohi was also called to the spot. He said manhole covers had been handed over to the UC chairman but questioned why they had not been placed.

A day ago, three-year-old Amara fell into an uncovered manhole in Baldia Town’s Sector 12-D. But the people of the area rushed to the spot and managed to pull her out. The girl sustained minor injuries.

According to people in the area, although the viral footage prompted civic officials to place a cover on the manhole involved in the incident, several others in the neighborhood still remain exposed.

Even the tragedy where a small child lost his life after falling into an uncovered bore well, NIPA failed to shake the civic authorities out of their apathy as no measures have been taken to prevent such fatal incidents.
