Minister of Power, Awais Ahmed Leghari, held a meeting with the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Natalie Baker, to discuss the ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s electricity sector and explore potential investment opportunities.
During the meeting, Leghari sought Ambassador Baker’s support in engaging US-based multilateral development partners and international financial institutions, including the IMF and the World Bank. He requested their assistance in removing obstacles to sustainable growth in Pakistan’s power sector, particularly in facilitating structural reforms and improving sector-specific performance.
Leghari also briefed the ambassador on the recently launched surplus power package, designed to offer competitively priced electricity to industrial consumers. He urged US support to extend this package to green industries, which would stimulate further investment and industrial growth.
The discussion also focused on efforts to address inefficiencies in the electricity distribution system, with particular attention to reducing technical and commercial losses and improving recovery. Ambassador Baker expressed appreciation for the Power Ministry’s ongoing reforms and praised the government’s progress in addressing circular debt through targeted, data-driven interventions.
Both sides explored investment opportunities for US investors, particularly in Pakistan’s power transmission sector. Ambassador Baker expressed great interest in these opportunities.
Leghari sought the US Ambassador’s support to encourage US investors to consider acquiring DISCOs to further improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
