It was at this tournament two years ago that Luke Littler announced himself to the world and left his indelible mark on darts. He was 16 years old, unseen and virtually unknown. Fast forward 24 months and he returns to the Ally Pally as both the youngest World Champion and the – newly anointed – youngest World No. 1 in darts history.
His best hope lies in frustrating his 18-year-old opponent. Littler prefers a fast pace, certainly faster than Labanauska’s, so the 49-year-old has nothing to lose by taking an extra second here to adjust his feet at the yoke, another there to line up and as many as he dares on the walk to and from the goal in front of a wild crowd.
Luke “The Nuke” leads a field of 128 players in London aiming to emulate Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson as only the fourth player to retain the Sid Waddell Trophy and, amazingly, for all he has achieved in such a short space of time, he is in the form of his life.
2022/23 World Champion Michael Smith will also feature in the opening session against Women’s World Match Play Champion Lisa Ashton. Kim Huybrechts vs Arno Merk and Madars Razma vs Jamai van den Herik are the other two draws.
