The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is now on YouTube, which means you don’t have to go and watch Avatar: Fire and Ashes for your first glimpse of the next big Marvel event.
The video is right below – I won’t say anything about what you’ll find in it so you can get the full experience.
Look at
The trailer is entirely focused on Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Captain America himself, first hinting at him though glimpses of this motorcycle before showing the house familiar to people who have seen the end of Avengers: Endgame a million times (me), and then Steve holding a baby.
I guess we’ll assume this is his baby and that Captain America hasn’t turned to kidnapping in his theoretical retirement years.
It ends with a statement that is something of an open secret to any Marvel fan paying attention online: Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
I say his “theoretical retirement years” because it’s fair to say I have mixed feelings about poor Steve being retired in the Marvel movies.
Steve – and Chris Evans’ performance – was, in my opinion, the best thing about Infinity Sage and the entire wildly successful first great era of the MCU. And the way Final game centers him and then concludes that his story is crucial to why I think that film is a five-star masterpiece.
For me to pull him back right when he was out – like Michael Corleone himself – smacks more of desperation over the problematic nature of the MCU than anything else. I don’t think it’s creatively exciting, I think it’s a step backwards.
The flip side of this argument, however, was succinctly stated by my colleague Lance Ulanoff: “The only reason to see Avengers: Doomsday will Steve Rogers return”.
I think Lance is underselling Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom as a tie there, but ultimately I agree. And it looks like Marvel is on the same page as this is literally our first look at Doomsdaybefore even seeing Doctor Doom.
I expect a lot of people will feel a little underwhelmed by this short and thin trailer, of course – if you’re wondering what’s going on and don’t mind being spoiled, let’s recap what the leak says.
The leaked Avengers: Doomsday trailer plans to expect – spoilers ahead!
When this trailer leaked online about a week ago, my colleague Tom Power reported on the alleged plans for Avengers: Doomsday trailers are a month-long saga:
“The gossip columns are full of reports that the next one will focus on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, before the third gives us our first official look at Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom. The fourth and final video is rumored to be Doomsdays actual teaser trailer.”
It’s a great way to make sure Avatar: Fire and Ashes makes as much money as humanly possible, not that the Avatar movies have had any problems in this regard. The new one has made $345 million in its first weekend, and these movies traditionally make money over a long period of time – and Disney seems to have guaranteed that by teasing these Avengers trailers.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to be released on December 18, 2026.
