Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon was the latest NFL coach to be shown the door on “Black Monday,” being fired a day after the team suffered its ninth straight loss of the season.
The move was announced via the team’s website after the Cardinals ended the season with a 37–20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

“Jonathan is a very smart, motivated, enthusiastic, intelligent, great coach,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said during a news conference Monday.

“He made us better, but I think, as you all know, this is a league about wins and losses. The wins and losses speak for themselves – especially this year. We just felt like we were going in the wrong direction and we had to change course.”
Gannon, 43, was brief with the media after the game and had little to elaborate after the Cardinals finished with a 3-14 record.

“Not a great one,” he said when asked to sum up the season. “A lot of adversity, but growth will happen.”
“My best memory? My best memory hasn’t happened,” he continued. “It will be the growth that comes from this year. That’s a good question.”

Gannon declined to speculate on his future, telling reporters that Monday would look like “the same 24 hours” of any Monday after failing to make the playoffs. But that was not the case.
His dismissal comes after three seasons with the organization, but the 2024 NFL season marked Gannon’s worst — by far.
The Cardinals burst out of the gate with two straight wins, but injuries to stars like Kyler Murray and James Conner combined with sloppy, self-inflicted mistakes — notably Emari Demercado’s premature celebration and fumbled goal line — quickly ended any realistic playoff hopes.

Gannon even had his own sideline blunder when he was fined $100,000 by the NFL for appearing to get into an argument with Demercado after the dropped ball.
Gannon leaves the organization with a 15-36 record.
