Kiefer Sutherland was taken into police custody in Los Angeles after an alleged confrontation with a driver, according to authorities.
The incident happened early Monday near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood, where officers were called to reports of an alleged assault involving a carpool vehicle.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the suspect was later identified as Sutherland.
Police allege the actor entered the rideshare, physically assaulted the driver and then made criminal threats against the victim.
Officers arrested Sutherland at the scene on suspicion of making criminal threats. The LAPD noted that the alleged victim did not suffer any injuries that required medical attention.
Legal documents obtained by Page six show that the 24-star was arrested and booked Monday, with bail set at $50,000.
He was released later that day at 11.30pm local time. Sutherland is scheduled to appear in court on February 2. NBC 4 News in Los Angeles was the first outlet to report the arrest.
This is not the first time the actor has faced legal problems.
In September 2007, Sutherland was charged with DUI in Los Angeles after failing a field sobriety test. He later pleaded no contest to the DUI charge and was sentenced to 48 days in jail.
He was released on bail at the time.
Sutherland has also previously been charged with assault after a 2009 incident in New York involving fashion designer Jack McCollough after a Metropolitan Museum of Art fundraiser.
The charges were eventually dropped after both parties issued a joint statement.
“I am sorry for what happened that night and sincerely regret that Mr. McCollough was hurt,” Sutherland said at the time. McCollough responded, “I appreciate Mr. Sutherland’s statement and wish him the best of luck.”
The past few years have been personally difficult for the actor. His father, the legendary actor Donald Sutherland, died in 2024 at the age of 88, and Kiefer called him “one of the most important actors in the history of cinema.”
Recently, Sutherland reflected on memorable moments from his career while appearing in a TV special, sharing stories from his time working with Rob Reiner and Jack Nicholson.
The case involving the rideshare driver is now moving through the court system, and Sutherland’s upcoming court date is expected to determine the next steps.
