Legendary pro golfer Greg Norman praised President Donald Trump on Wednesday for the United States’ action in Venezuela last week that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

Norman, the two-time British Open champion and former LIV Golf CEO, spoke with “Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy in Florida and had glowing remarks about how the United States handled the situation in the South American country.

“He’s true to his word,” Norman said. “And I said this in his first term, I’ve known quite a few presidents, but he’s the first president I’ve spent time with who has real stars and stripes running through his blood.

“So what he did in Venezuela, I applaud it. The timing, the execution of it just showed the sheer strength and power and determination of the United States to protect their hemisphere, and they should be protecting their backyard.”

Trump announced on January 3 that US special forces conducted a “large-scale raid” on Caracas and seized Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Both were taken to New York and appeared in federal court in Manhattan on January 5 on drug charges, to which they each pleaded not guilty.

The raid came after months of pressure on Venezuela and more than two dozen strikes in Latin American waters against alleged drug traffickers as part of Trump’s efforts to crack down on the flow of drugs into the United States

The Trump administration routinely declared that it did not recognize Maduro as a legitimate head of state, saying he was the leader of a drug cartel. Likewise, Trump said in December 2025 that he thought it would be “smart” for Maduro to step down.

The Trump administration has justified seizing Maduro as a “law enforcement operation,” and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said congressional approval was not needed since the operation did not amount to an “invasion.”
