- A new memory upgrade is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users today
- ChatGPT can now remember what you asked a year ago
- Click Sources to find the exact conversations you had
ChatGPT can now remember what you asked a year ago and show you the exact conversation. This new memory upgrade for Plus and Pro users makes old chats searchable, permanent and surprisingly useful.
Its memory is now so good that you can ask it for the chili sauce recipe you asked for a year ago, and there’s a good chance it’ll find it, complete with a link back to the exact conversation.
ChatGPT never forgets
Before the recent memory upgrade, if you asked ChatGPT what you were talking about a year ago, it would usually respond with some version of “I don’t actually have a window into your full chat history going back a year,” followed by a handful of fairly ineffective suggestions that involve digging through your browsing history.
Now, instead, it flashes a “remembering” message and then hits you with exactly what you asked a year ago.
As a Plus user, I’ve just tried it – and it’s actually quite impressive. I wrote:
“What did I ask you a year ago?”
What I got back was a detailed outline of everything I had asked for back then. Apparently I went through a phase of asking ChatGPT to analyze Nicolas Winding Refn movies. If you’ve ever seen any of them, you’ll probably understand why I needed a little help.

Check your sources
Thanks to the source function in ChatGPT, you can now jump directly back to the exact chats from a year ago. Click Sources at the bottom of the reply and a panel will open showing direct links to the original conversations.
This is truly impressive. Suddenly, chats no longer feel available. I’ve long since moved on from trying to decipher Refn’s inner workings, but it was fascinating to revisit these conversations.
If you are a Plus or Pro user, you can try this for yourself right now. There’s no need to update ChatGPT – just ask it what you asked a year ago and you might be surprised what comes back. The feature has rolled out globally to all ChatGPT Plus and Pro users today.
And of course you can too follow TechRadar on TikTok for news, reviews, video unboxings, and get regular updates from us on WhatsApp also.
