Hosts Morocco face surprise Africa Cup of Nations 2025/26 finalists Senegal at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, with both teams out to secure their second AFCON title. Since reaching the last four of the 2022 World Cup and securing co-hosting rights for 2030, the Atlas Lions have dreamed of this moment. The legend has already been invented, the fireworks choreographed, the golden generation sworn in, but this could still be Senegal’s story.
Five years ago, Mane scored the winning penalty that secured Senegal’s first AFCON title. On Wednesday, he secured their passage to the final. With Sunday’s clash set to be his final AFCON appearance, it would be one heck of a curtain call. The biggest concern for Pape Thiaw is that two of his key men, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and combative midfielder Habib Diarra, are suspended.
Walid Regragui’s pragmatic approach has not endeared him to Moroccan fans, but it has been confirmed. They have conceded just once across six games and managed to shut out free-scoring Nigeria in midweek thanks to Yassine Bounou’s penalty shootout heroics. They will therefore not be overwhelmed by Senegal’s all-star attack consisting of Mane, Nicolas Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr.
However, what could keep Regragui up at night is the form of Brahim Diaz. The Real Madrid man leads the way with five goals, but if Mane is able to keep African Player of the Year Achraf Hakimi back, he will cut off Diaz’s main supply line. Ayoub El Kaabi and Ismael Saibari are the only other Moroccan players to have found the net.
