A fire that broke out at the Al Najeebi electronic market in Karachi’s Saddar was brought under control on Monday with cooling underway, according to the Rescue 1122 spokesperson.

A statement from Rescue 1122 said the fire department, along with rescue teams and an ambulance, were sent to the scene after the information was received.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan said in an update that the fire had been brought under control and the cooling process was underway. He said all people were safely evacuated with a search for more underway as the department had managed to enter the building, adding that two people were affected and had fallen unconscious from the smoke.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took immediate notice of the incident and asked for a report from the Karachi Commissioner.

He also ordered immediate rescue and relief operations in the affected buildings.

The Chief Minister contacted the Karachi Mayor, Commissioner and Superintendent of Police.

“First priority is that if people are trapped in the market, they must be evacuated first. Human life must be saved at any cost, then property must be saved.

“The police should perform crowd management so that the firefighting work can be done properly. Ensure timely delivery of water to the fire brigade from bowsers. Perform rescue work with municipalities, administration and police team work,” the chief minister said in a statement.

It added that he ordered the staff to work and coordinate with other departments to handle the rescue operation properly.

Sindh Superintendent of Police Javed Alam Odho ordered the South Superintendent of Police and Traffic Superintendent of Police to reach the spot and gave orders to clear the passage for emergency vehicles.

He also ordered the security of other shops and markets near the main affected building.
