LONDON: Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has expressed warm feelings about Lahore’s iconic Basant festival, saying he was happy to see pictures of the celebrations and the joy they brought to people across Pakistan.
Speaking in London to Pakinomist newsthe Mayor of London said he had seen the coverage of Basant and was struck by the visible joy of the participants.
“I watched Lahore Basant on Pakinomist newswhere people are very happy under Basant. I pray that Basant is always celebrated safely. It is a good thing that people are flying kites again in Lahore,” he said.
Basant, traditionally associated with the arrival of spring, has long been a crucial cultural event in Lahore.
Rooftops across the city fill with families and friends flying colorful kites, while neighborhoods reverberate with music and celebration. In recent years, however, the festival has faced restrictions due to safety concerns, particularly related to dangerous kite lines and roof accidents.
Khan emphasized the importance of ensuring that public safety remains central to any celebration.
