- Rode announces a firmware update for Wireless Go (Gen 3) and Wireless Pro
- It adds a Direct Connect feature
- The update is available for free starting today
If you own a Rode Wireless Go (Gen 3) or Wireless Pro microphone and have been eyeing the newer, cheaper Wireless Micro’s feature list with envy, here’s some good news: the company has just released an update that brings one of Micro’s most convenient features to the Go and Pro — and it won’t cost you a penny.
The free firmware update enables the Wireless Go (Gen 3) and Wireless Pro to use Direct Connect, meaning their transmitters can pair directly with Apple iPhones and iPads via Bluetooth. This means users running the iOS Rode Capture app can now record what Rode describes as “broadcast quality audio” on their Apple mobile devices without the need for a receiver or cable.
It’s a brilliant feature for anyone looking to run a streamlined recording setup, and one that Rode Wireless Micro users have had access to since its launch in 2024.
When using Direct Connect and the Capture app, audio can be delivered in either merged or split mode. The former uses two transmitters to create and output a single stereo track, while the latter creates a separate track for each transmitter, allowing the user more adjustment in post-production. Of course, users can also install a single transmitter and record a single mono track.
No cable? No problem
“We’ve already seen the incredible impact Direct Connect has had on creators using the Wireless Micro,” said Rode CEO Damien Wilson. “Since launch, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, giving creators more flexibility and versatility than ever before. As pioneers in the ultra-compact wireless microphone category, it’s our duty to extend true wireless freedom to as many creators as possible. With Direct Connect now available on more Rode systems, we’re delivering just that.”
With this update, and both the Wireless Go (Gen 3) and Wireless Pro dropping in price recently (to $199 / £179.99 and $299 / £269.99 respectively), there may never have been a better time to grab one of Rode’s premium wireless microphones.
