KARACHI:
To enhance earthquake monitoring in the country’s northern belt, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has installed a new broadband seismic observatory in the Hunza Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, to improve real-time detection and detailed analysis of low-intensity earthquakes.
The new installation has been set up to improve monitoring of seismic activity in the Hunza region and enable authorities to detect smaller earthquakes as they occur.
Earlier, three seismic stations were operational at Gilgit, Skardu and Chilas. However, coverage in the northern areas remained limited, necessitating further expansion to ensure more extensive monitoring.
According to the PMD, seismic monitoring in the region was further intensified following recent reports of explosion-like sounds and mild tremors in Chapursan Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan.
