- AI use has now become a promotion for Accenture
- Older workers are reluctant to adopt, non-users previously warned of their unsuitability
- Decision raises questions about who creates content at Accenture
Accenture is now said to monitor employee AI use to tie promotion eligibility to the “regular adoption” of internal AI tools, per Financial Times reporting.
Weekly logins to Accenture’s AI tools are linked to some of its senior staff. These will be visible factors in the company’s decisions about summer promotions.
This is because senior workers seem to be more reluctant to adopt artificial intelligence compared to more junior workers, and workers are clearly not happy about the changes.
Some employees have already called the tools ineffective “broken slop generators,” with one employee even threatening to “quit immediately” if they were directly affected.
“Using our key tools will be a visible input to talent discussions,” an email seen by Financial Times reader.
However, not all workers appear to be equally affected. Accenture employees in 12 European countries will be exempt, and those in the US federal government’s contracting department are also exempt from the new metric.
While the enforcement may seem extreme, CEO Julie Sweet had previously warned that staff unable to adapt to AI may no longer be a good fit for the company.
And the company is not in the best place at the moment, with share prices down around 42% over the past year. The latest quarterly revenue growth was 5%, with growth for the full year at a modest 3-5% increase.
“Our strategy is to be the reinvention partner of choice for our customers and to be the most customer-focused, AI-enabled, great place to work,” the company said, citing the need to employ “the latest tools and technologies.”
