Mandalorian and Grogu will officially mark the return of Star Wars to the big screen. The film, due May 22, will be the first Lucasfilm project to hit theaters in nearly seven years. Some might say that *ahem* this is how Star Wars should be experienced.

The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer
Mandalorian and Grogu‘s first trailer landed online in September 2025. While it teased many, including Sigourney Weaver’s character and Rotta the Hutt (more on those soon), it didn’t tell us anything about the plot.
Things didn’t get any clearer after a new teaser for The Mandalorian & Grogu was broadcast during this year’s Super Bowl. In fact, the 30-second TV spot drew negative reactions from parts of the Star Wars fanbase who just wanted another extended look at the upcoming film.
Fortunately, Disney and Lucasfilm revealed Mandalorian and Groguthe main trailer on February 17. Check it out below:

Here is the confirmed cast list so far for the upcoming Star Wars movie:
- Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian
- Grogu as himself
- Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward
- Steve Blum as Garazeb ‘Zeb’ Orrelios
- Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt
- Martin Scorsese as an unnamed Arden shopkeeper
Seam The Mandalorians leading couple, it wouldn’t be a sequel to the Disney+ Original show without Din Djarin and Grogu/Baby Yoda.
They’ll also be joined by at least one familiar face in this film, with Blum returning to voice Lasat, affectionately known as Zeb. After making his debut in the animated show Star Wars: Rebels as a member of the Ghost crew, Zeb is now captain of The New Republic. He will probably take orders from Colonel Ward, aka the previously mysterious character Sigourney Weaver was tapped to play in May 2024.
Weaver won’t be the only newcomer to the Star Wars franchise.
For starters, legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese will have a voice-only cameo as the Arden shopkeeper that Mando and Grogu visit to get information on some Hutts, also known to become crime lords.
White, who is best known for playing Carmen Berzatto in The bear (aka the multi-award winning and critically acclaimed Hulu TV show), has been cast as one such Hutt, with White hired to play Jabba the Hutt’s muscular son Rotta. He’s one of three confirmed Hutts we’ll see, though it’s unclear who will be voicing the others. For now, Disney and Lucasfilm simply refer to them as Brother and Sister Hutt.
Additionally, no one knows who has been hired to play Bai, Clang, and Keeto, ie. the three Ancellans we see riding with Grogu in trailer #1. So is Embo, a fearsome bounty hunter and Hutt bodyguard first seen during The Clone Wars. Embo was confirmed as part of the case in Mandalorian and Grogu‘s official trailer.
Finally, Deadline has reported that Coyne will reprise his role as one of the unnamed Imperial Warlords we saw in The Mandalorian season 3 episode 7. He is a member of the Shadow Council who met – via Hologram – with Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon in the Star Wars TV Original. Hopefully we’ll find out his real name in the movie.
Mandalorian and Grogu story synopsis and speculation
The Mandalorian & Grogu‘s story is largely under lock and key before release. In fact, Disney has only revealed a logline for the film, which reads: “The Evil Empire has fallen and Imperial warlords remain scattered across the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion stood for, they’ve enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young appeals.”
Still, the trailers, especially the latest one, have given an indication of what the story will entail. Potential spoilers immediately follow Mandalorian and Groguso proceed at your own risk.
Judging by Trailer #2’s first few clips, the eponymous duo will seek out Brother and Sister Hutt in order to extract information from them about the remnants of the Galactic Empire. That way, they can track down anyone still loyal to Emperor Palpatine (who isn’t dead yet, mind you) and, in Mando’s words, “take out every villain” in The New Republic’s “deck of cards.”
For Colonel Ward, though, sending Din and Baby Yoda on this mission “isn’t about revenge,” it’s about “preventing another war” from breaking out if the Galactic Empire rises from the ashes to try to tyrannize it over the galaxy again. Whether or not the titular couple agrees with that is up for debate.
Of course, our intrepid heroes’ plans won’t be executed without a few hiccups along the way. In fact, trailer #2 reveals that they will be in over their heads. With Din captured by the Hutts, Grogu hunted by Embo, and countless criminals and monsters out to get them, this could be the pair’s most dangerous mission yet.
Then there is the elephant in the room about how The Mandalorian & Grogu perhaps setting the stage for the Star Wars crossover movie new Lucasfilm co-CEO Dave Filoni leads development on
One of many new Star Wars movies and Disney+ shows in development, the untitled ensemble film will reportedly see Din Djarin, Grogu, Ahsoka Tano and other Star Wars heroes team up to battle Grand Admiral Thrawn. He is the blue-skinned Big Bad with ambitions to remake the galactic empire in his own image, and a fan-favorite villain played by Lars Mikkelsen in season 1 of Star Wars: Ahsoka.
Given that some Imperial remnants will appear in the Mandalorian and Grogushould we expect this movie to start sowing the seeds for that team up movie? Or has it been put on the back burner amid the leadership change at Lucasfilm? We’ll have to wait and see.
Is The Mandalorian Season 4 Still In Development?
Regardless of the ensemble film I mentioned, Lucasfilm and Disney would be foolish to bring Mando and Baby Yoda’s story to an end after Mandalorian and Grogu. The possibility of the couple returning to Disney+ (aka one of the world best streaming services) for another season is not outlandish.
Want a fourth season of The Mandalorian get done, though? In January 2024, Deadline reported that The Mandalorian season 4 was in development. Recently, Jon Favreau, co-creator of the Star Wars TV series and director of its upcoming film sequel, said, Empire magazine (per Fiction Horizon): “We had plans to do a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have season 4 sitting on my desk.”
In short, don’t expect Lucasfilm or its parent company to call time on two of their most popular characters just yet.
