A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 release date: what we know
AKotSK season 2 does not yet have a confirmed launch date. However, it was among many HBO shows that were renewed for another season last November. At the time, HBO also confirmed that it will premiere in 2027, so we won’t be waiting long for the high fantasy series to return.
The cameras are already rolling on its next chapter as well. speaks to AV Club showrunner Ira Parker revealed “we’re already cutting scenes together,” which bodes well for next year’s launch.
If — and it’s a big if — the principal photography and post-production phase of the HBO Max show’s second season is completed well before the end of 2026, I wouldn’t rule out January or February 2027. Fingers crossed that will be the case.
Is there a trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2?
No, and I bet there won’t be one until late 2026 at the earliest. When one is released, I’ll add it to this section of the guide.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 cast: confirmed and rumoured
Full spoilers follow AKotSK season 1. Possible season 2 spoilers are also discussed.
Here is the confirmed cast AKotSK season 2 so far:
- Peter Claffey as Duncan ‘Dunk’ the Tall
- Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon V ‘Egg’ Targaryen
Right now, Dunk and Egg are the only two characters returning next season. That’s because season 2 is based on The Sworn Swordalso known as the second story in the ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ novella trilogy. That book does not contain people who appear in it AKotSK‘s debut season or The hedge knighti.e. the first entry in the aforementioned book saga. In short, the likes of Maekar and Aerion Targaryen, Lyonel Baratheon and Raymun Fossoway will not appear.
Nevertheless, there will be new characters to love and hate in equal measure – and speaking to the AV Club, Parker has already highlighted three that viewers will want to keep an eye on.
“The Sworn Sword… is my favorite short story in many ways, with Rohanne Webber or the Red Widow, Ser Bennis and Ser Eustace, who are these classic characters,” Parker said. “I can’t say much, but we have three absolutely brilliant actors who are going to play these roles… [but] it feels great to see [season two] slowly coming together.”
Peter Claffey (Dunk) clarifies that Henry Cavill will not be joining the Game of Thrones universe following online speculation: “Just to clarify, what Dex referred to in the interview had nothing to do with Henry Cavill joining the show or the GOT universe (I wish!) … pic.twitter.com/RLWzfPlRVW15 February 2026
While Parker is keeping mum on the actors who will portray the aforementioned trio, Claffey has played down suggestions that The Witcher alumnus Henry Cavill joins the cast.
As reported by Thrones X/Twitter fan account Westerosies (see above), Claffey stopped co-star Ansell from mentioning something to do with Cavill at a recent fan convention. As rumors swirled about Cavill’s potential involvement, Claffey took to Instagram to pour more cold water on said speculation.
Of course, this could be a misdirection on Claffey’s part to maintain the surprise that Cavill will be part of the proceedings. I guess we will have to wait A knight of the seven kingdoms season 2 to come out to find out.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 Story Speculation
A knight of the seven kingdoms season 2, which might actually be called A knight of the nine kingdoms (more on why later), doesn’t have a plot synopsis yet.
However, that will not prevent us from discussing its history. As I mentioned earlier, it will adapt The Sworn Swordalso known as the second entry in George RR Martin’s ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ franchise. Fans of the books will therefore already know what to expect from it.
For the rest of you, however, you should be aware of it potential spoilers immediately follow AKotSK season 2. So if you don’t want to know anything else, skip to the next section and/or read my spoiler-less A Knight of the Seven K’singdoms season 1 ending explained piece instead.
Let’s start with the name of the upcoming season, which many expect to be called A knight of the seven kingdoms season 2.
However, in one of the scenes in last season’s finale, Egg informs Dunk that there are actually nine kingdoms, not seven. This results in a new title card, aka A knight of the nine kingdoms (AKotNK), is shown before the Season 1 end credits roll for the last time, leading some to believe that this is the official title for the next season.
So will it be? Chatting with Variety , Parker teased, “Maybe I’m being a bit too funny… People are going to react to it and and I will react to it after not seeing it for a few months. And we’ll see. I like it. A lot of the wonderful creatives that I worked with liked it too. It came from a very honest place.”
The other big question on viewers’ minds is: where are Dunk and Egg going? I don’t want to spoil the places they will visit, but Parker has already confirmed the return of a place there Thrones fans will be familiar with. “They’re going to Dorne,” he admitted. “How much of that we cover, I’ll leave it up to people to tune in for Season 2.”
As for how many episodes there will be, Parker confirmed to Collider that, like Season 1, there will be six chapters, with each chapter lasting between 35 and 40 minutes.
For longtime fans of Martin’s literary works, this will come as no surprise. After all, each tale is short story length—that is. it tells a short story involving Dunk and Egg. But given that Season 2 will follow its predecessor in being as close to an authentic adaptation of its source material as possible. Parker told Collider that “we[‘ll] never change history. The beginning is the beginning, the middle is the middle, and the end is the end.” There also won’t be many, if any, creative departures from the original plot.
Has HBO announced A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 3 yet?
Nothing has been announced, but HBO would be crazy not to renew A knight of the seven kingdoms for at least one more season.
Indeed, with the ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ book series’ final entry – unless Martin writes another short story, which he might – is The mysterious knightwould it make sense for a third season to be green.
When you think about it AKotSK season 1 averaged nearly 13 million weekly viewers on HBO alone before its sixth and final episode aired (as of Variety) on the 22nd/23rd February, there is clearly also an appetite for more.
A third and final season may not be the end of the road for Dunk and Egg either. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker revealed that Martin has shared 12 pitches for unpublished Dunk and Egg stories with him that “take them all the way through their lives.”
Elaborating further in an interview with The Wrap, Parker expressed her desire to “make four [seasons] with Egg the boy, four with Egg the Prince, and four with Egg the king – but do them every 10 years. So make a pocket, Peter and Dexter can go off, have their careers, and then we’ll come back in 10 years and we’ll do four more of these,” which would be a fun way to approach things creatively.
So there’s the potential for many more chapters on HBO Max and many of the world’s top streaming services after Season 3. And given that Dunk and Egg have become as firm fan favorites with casual fans as they were with Thrones devotees before . AKotSK Season 1’s debut, the more seasons the better, I say.
