Dyson spoils us. Towards the end of last year, the brand launched an ultra-compact new vacuum cleaner, PencilVac, and a new flexible cleaner for hard floors, Clean+Wash Hygiene. Now the best features of both cleaners have been combined to create the Dyson PencilWash.
This new hard floor cleaner features the PencilVac’s streamlined design and shrunk motor, and takes its mopping cues from the efficient Clean+Wash Hygiene. Here’s a rundown of this innovative new cleaner’s most exciting features…
1. It’s so compact
The (baby) elephant in the room is the size. Many of today’s best wet-and-dry vacuums are thick and heavy, but the PencilWash is almost impossibly slim. It uses a small motor which is small enough to fit inside the 1.5 inch / 38mm handle. The battery is equally compact and clips on to form the top of the handle. The water tanks are then integrated into the floor header.
This means that the entire unit is not much larger than a regular-sized broom. It is also light with a weight of 2.2 kg. Designing the water tanks to fit into the floor head means they’re quite small, but thanks to careful water distribution, Dyson says they should be good for up to 100 square meters of cleaning per wash.
2. There is no filter
The effect of the waste water tank being located inside the floor head is that the dirty liquid hardly needs to move. As a result, there is no risk of any hoses becoming blocked or starting to emit unpleasant smells. In fact, Dyson boasts that there is no filter at all here.
3. It is extremely maneuverable
In addition to having a streamlined design, the PencilWash is built for maneuverability. This is one area where Dyson excels – most of today’s best Dyson vacuum cleaners are ultra-maneuverable. This one also has the benefit of the broom-shaped handle, which means there’s no bulk around the top section either.
Dyson says the PencilWash will spin smoothly with the twist of a wrist, and based on my experience with the PencilVac, I can believe it. It can also fold almost flat (170 degrees), in which state it is only 5.9 inches / 15 cm tall and can easily slide under low furniture.
The Dyson PencilWash goes on sale in the US on March 17th and in the UK on February 23rd with a list price of $349 / £299.99. (Australian availability and pricing TBC). Full review to follow.
