- Shark has announced a new robotic vacuum cleaner and mop: the PowerDetect UV Reveal
- It is equipped with a UV light and an RGB camera to seek out invisible dirt
- A conscious scrubbing motion is then activated to clear the mess
Shark has come up with an innovative way to show customers exactly how well its new robot vacuum works. The newly announced PowerDetect UV Reveal features an ultraviolet light that works with an RGB camera to spot and highlight invisible clutter before cleaning it away.
Shark says the idea is to provide “insight into what happens at each step of the cleaning process”. There are lights that indicate the robot is looking for a spot, then the UV beam will kick in to illuminate the mess. Shark lists dried liquids, juice, food splatter, sweat and pet accidents as examples of things PowerDetect UV Reveal can see.
Once a hidden spill has been identified, the robot vacuum goes into ‘HyperSonic Mopping’ mode where it will scrub the floor with a deliberate motion before confirming that the dirt is gone before moving on.
“We heard from consumers with robot vacuums that they were never sure if the job was done or what had been cleaned,” said Andy Sundberg, VP of Marketing at SharkNinja. “That’s why we created PowerDetect UV Reveal. By uncovering hidden messes and showing exactly how to clean them, it gives customers visibility and assurance that their floors don’t just look clean – they are clean.”
Elsewhere, the PowerDetect UV Reveal boasts ‘NeuroNav AI’ navigation and ‘NeverStuck Technology’, designed to allow it to move safely, intelligently and accurately around your home without getting lost or caught. It can run for up to three hours per charging.
The dock has also been upgraded compared to previous Shark robot vacuum cleaners. The new ‘ThermaCharged NeverTouch Pro Base’ cleans the mop pad after each use. Although bagless, Shark features an ‘Anti-Allergen Complete Seal’ to prevent allergens from escaping once absorbed. I will be interested to see exactly how it works in practice.
Price & availability
The PowerDetect UV Reveal can be purchased now in the US, directly from Shark or through a number of third-party retailers such as Amazon, Costco and Best Buy. Prices start from $1,299.99 (roughly £960 / AU$1,845), though Shark isn’t afraid of a deal and I suspect it won’t be too difficult to avoid paying full price. Shark has a strong presence in the UK and Australia, but as yet I have no word on if or when the PowerDetect UV Reveal might become available there.
