I am reminded of the text”hell is in hi” from the musical Paint your wagon because that’s how I started today’s game Strands.
It comes from the song Walking Starwhich was crooned magnificently crudely by actor Lee Marvin, whose character preferred to leave places rather than arrive at them.
Unlike Mr. Marvin, I love fancy people with flashy vocabulary and would love to be greeted every morning by someone, preferably a butler with a tray of tea and toast, greeting me.
I’m also partial to an AHOY – this was Alexander Graham Bell’s proposed telephone greeting, something his less nautically inclined telephone rival Thomas Edison replaced with the less fussy HELLO.
Missing from this list is the term for hello everyone used throughout my school years, the now largely redundant “watcha” and its goodbye equivalent “seeya”.
Yesterday’s NYT Strand’s Answer (Monday, March 9, Game #736)
- PUMPKIN
- BEAN
- MUFFIN
- LUMP
- DUMPLING
- PEANUT
- SPANGRAM: ENDEARMENTS
