The producers behind Spider-Verse movies have revealed whether they would be open to overseeing the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) reboot.
In an exclusive chat with TechRadar, Phil Lord and Chris Miller didn’t rule out the possibility. But they also admitted that “so many hypotheticals” would have to fall into place for it to become a reality.
The discussion was part of a wider interview about the duo’s new sci-fi epic Project Hi Mary (NB: check min Project Hi Mary review to see if it’s worth watching). The Ryan Gosling-led film is the first big-screen project Lord and Miller have directed since 2014’s 22 Jump Streeta result of countless producing roles the pair have held over the past decade.

Of those productions, four have centered on Spider-Man – or rather, alternate versions of the superhero alias of one Peter Parker. In fact, Lord and Miller oversaw the work of the first two Spider-Verse film and also leads the development of the film trilogy’s final entry, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Additionally, Lord and Miller executive produced Spider-Noira 1930s Nicolas Cage-fronted live-action show coming to MGM+ (US) and Prime Video (international) on May 27.
Given their involvement in several non-Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects starring various incarnations of the wall-crawler, the pair seem ideally placed to spearhead version 2.0 of the SSU.
Last December, it appeared that Sony Pictures was calling time on its Spider-Man-less cinematic franchise after a string of critical and commercial flops. But just two months later, the studio’s head of film Tom Rothman indicated (per the On the Town podcast) that Sony planned to reboot the SSU at some point.
In the event that Sony asked them to be the creative overlords of the SSU—you know, like Kevin Feige at Marvel, James Gunn/Peter Safran at DC, and Dave Filoni/Lynwen Brennan for Star Wars—would Lord and Miller be interested?
“It’s one great ‘if’,” replied the Lord. “It’s like the biggest ‘if’ in the world.”
“There are so many hypotheses out there in the universe,” Miller added. “But as you know, we’re big fans of Spider-Man and that whole universe, so who knows?”
