PESHAWAR:
With just a few days left for Eid, bustling markets in the city are witnessing a significant influx of shoppers eager to complete their festive preparations. After shopping for new clothes, residents are now turning their attention to the iconic Peshawari chappals, a traditional staple that complements Eid attire.
The historic Jahangirpura market remains the epicenter of authentic Peshawari chappal shopping. From morning until late at night, people throng the shops, including children accompanying the elderly. Shoppers are opting for colorful variants to match their new outfits, preferring popular styles like ‘panjey daar’, band high karam, single sole and double sole designs.
The increase reflects the deep cultural attachment to these handmade leather sandals, known for their durability and distinctive Peshawari craftsmanship.
However, inflation has driven prices up considerably. Suppliers report that the price of raw materials, especially leather and other components, has risen sharply. Compared to last year, prices have increased by Rs1,000 to Rs3,000 per pair.
What once cost Rs 1,500. now retails for around Rs 2,000. pairs that were earlier priced at Rs2,000 are now Rs3,000 and those at Rs3,000 have gone up to Rs5,000 or more. Store owners attribute the increase directly to escalating material costs amid broader economic pressures.
Despite the higher prices, demand remains robust, underscoring the chappal’s continued popularity during Eid celebrations.
In a modern twist, Peshawari chappals are increasingly available online. Dedicated websites and e-commerce platforms allow customers to browse designs, make payments and receive doorstep delivery across Pakistan. This shift has made it easier for those living outside of Peshawar to purchase authentic pairs without visiting the Jahangirpura market, with several specialized websites catering specifically to this demand. Many foreigners and out-of-towners opt for online shopping to secure their Eid essentials.
As Eid approaches, the combination of tradition, style and evolving retail options continues to define Peshawar’s festive shopping scene.
