- The latest iOS 26.4 beta is available for download
- Apple says it has “improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly”
- But it seems that not all keyboard bugs have been fixed
Typing on your iPhone’s keyboard can be an exercise in frustration at times—between misspelled words and overzealous autocorrect, it’s sometimes harder than it should be to type what you want. That’s why an apparent bug in iOS 26 has caused so much consternation among Apple fans in recent weeks, but it looks like a fix is on the way in iOS 26.4.
The question in question concerned so-called “missing characters”. Many users found that iOS would sometimes ignore characters that were printed when users typed very quickly. This would force people to pause and then try the button again, which would slow them down. Or the missing characters would cause autocorrect to misinterpret the word being typed and change it to something the user did not intend.
Apple seems to have fixed this annoying issue in the latest iOS 26.4 beta. In its release notes accompanying the update, Apple said the new version has “improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly.” However, as I have discovered, it may not have been able to squash all iOS 26 errors related to typing.

An imperfect solution?
Hopefully the iOS 26.4 update will fix the missing characters issue. If you’ve been experiencing this while texting friends and family, you might find that Apple has finally fixed things up.
However, I’ve been testing iOS 26.4 and have noticed that an annoying bug associated with the emoji button – whereby the emoji key is not recognized if you type quickly – seems to be fixed. This issue has been highlighted on social media, with Reddit user crazyserb89, for example, saying that the bug “drives me crazy.”
In my experience, pressing the emoji button in the middle of a rapid flurry of letters instead activated the 123/ABC button located above it. Only when I paused my typing did the emoji control work properly.
Although anecdotal, it suggests that the iOS 26.4 update hasn’t completely fixed the typing experience for Apple fans. Hopefully Apple can fix it in a future update.
To download iOS 26.4, you must be enrolled in the iOS 26 public beta. Once that’s sorted, open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update, wait for the download to appear, then tap Update Now. Make sure you have backed up your iPhone before starting in case something goes wrong.
