- The film is inspired by the online horror stories and will be released on May 29
A24’s new film Backrooms just got a full trailer ahead of its May 29th release, and the found footage elements have me even more excited to go see it.
I’m a big fan of liminal space in horror films and it seems to be a trend at the moment. We recently watched NEON’s trailer Finish 8as well as the first teaser trailer for Backroomswhich I described as “perfect”.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass lead the cast of this film, with major horror producers attached like James Wan and Osgood Perkins.

What we know about A24’s Backrooms film
Kane Parsons is the writer-director of the project, having gained notoriety for his YouTube web series about these eerie fictional locations. Thank god they is also fictitious as I don’t want to get stuck in any of them.
If you’re new to the concept, “Backrooms” are basically these strange liminal, maze-like dimensions of empty spaces and buzzing fluorescent lights. People who get stuck there are said to have glitched out of their reality into these endless, surreal and often hostile environments.
Lots of stories have been written about them, especially via Creepypasta, depicting empty office spaces, shopping malls and endless hotel corridors. They often have a retro feel and uncomfortable lighting, and as you can see from the trailer, A24 and Parsons have chosen to focus on the sickly yellow color for their Backrooms design.
Plot-wise, we know that the film will follow a therapist as she ventures into an otherworldly dimension in search of her missing patient. We don’t know much more yet, so we’ll have to be brave and discover Backrooms‘ secrets to ourselves in the cinemas.
This could definitely be up there with some of A24’s biggest and creepiest films, and I’ll be first in line to see it when it comes out in May.
