Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have found a way to return to the royal fold as Queen Elizabeth II’s heartbreaking request emerges.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex left their senior royal positions in 2020 and had complaints about how they were treated compared to the other members of the family. Although the Queen insisted that “memories may vary”, she still kept the door open to the Sussexes, especially her great-grandchildren Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
New details of the matriarch’s final days were revealed in the forthcoming book by royal author Robert Hardman, which pulls back the curtain on Elizabeth’s heartfelt plea and clear message to her grandchildren.
Before she breathed her last at Balmoral in September 2022, Elizabeth already felt “too tired” for many of the engagements she had ongoing treatments. That’s why she had saved it for one last reunion with her beloved, despite the smoldering rifts.
One of the officials revealed that Elizabeth was “so brave” during her final days and before traveling to Edinburgh, she held a final round of audiences and a Privy Council meeting.
“We had a private chat at the end of it,” said an insider from the meeting. “I felt a little emotional when I left because it just felt like goodbye to me.”
They continued: “She had some very clear messages about how she thought things would go in the future. Very clear, indeed!”
The source revealed that all of the Queen’s great-grandchildren – including the Sussex children along with William and Kate’s three children – were invited to Balmoral at some point in the summer.
“She wanted to make sure they all had a really happy memory of her,” said a family friend. However, the late Queen somehow knew Harry and Meghan wouldn’t be able to pull it off.
This could potentially mean there was a way back for the Sussexes if they had taken a chance at the time. King Charles could be following his mother’s last wishes along with his own longing to meet his grandchildren as the clearances between Buckingham Palace and Montecito are said to be completed.
Meanwhile, it also remains to be seen how the situation develops for the King’s grandchildren.
