NEW Connections today (game #1034) – the answers

The answers to today’s Connections, game #1034, are…
- YELLOW: PEPPER PAPER, CAROLINA REAPER, CHIPOTLE, PEPPERONCINO
- GREEN: THINGS THAT POP UP EJECTOR SEAT, JACK-IN-THE-BOX, POP-UP BOOK, BROTHERS
- BLUE: DESCRIPTION FOR SWISS CHEESE SOLID, HOLLOW, NUTTY, SWITZERLAND
- PURPLE: BLUE CHARACTER BLUE, GENIUS, GONZO, SONIC
- My rating: Easy
- My score: Perfect
I quickly managed to grab the yellow PEPPERS group, but handed in my foursome with some trepidation as both JACK-IN-THE-BOX and EJECTOR SEAT, in the style of CAROLINA REAPER, sound like they could be particularly potent capiscums.
When I discovered a cheese group with SWISS and BLUE among the remaining tiles, I was tempted to include JACK-IN-THE-BOX here as well, but in the end the connection to TOASTER and the other THINGS THAT POP was too strong.
Meanwhile, I’m sure I’m not the only European cheese snob who would have preferred the group of FIRM, HOLEY, NUTTY, and SWISS to have been called Emmental cheese descriptors rather than SWISS CHEESE DESCRIPTORS, since there are dozens of Swiss cheeses and most of them don’t contain holes. Although to be fair, the cheeseheads at Connections HQ were thinking of Appenzeller.
Yesterday’s NEW Connections Answers (Thursday, April 9, Game #1033)

- GREEN: OINTMENT BALM, CREAM, PASTA, RUB
- BLUE: CONSTELLATION SYMBOLS Archer, FISH, GOAT, RAM
- PURPLE: MUSCULAR, MINUS “ED” SOUND JACK, RIP, SHRED, YOKE
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different degree of difficulty: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough, and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t need to solve the last one, as you’ll be able to answer it by a process of elimination. Also, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.
It’s a bit more involved than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to let you beat yourself up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that can hide the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
